What Is Overtime Pay?
Overtime pay is the extra compensation you earn for working beyond your standard hours. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must be paid time and a half (1.5×) for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
Some situations also involve double time (2×) pay — for holidays, state-mandated daily overtime thresholds, or union agreements — even though double time isn't required under federal law.
This calculator is built for weeks where your pay isn't a single flat rate — it combines your regular hours, 1.5× overtime hours, and 2× double-time hours into one complete weekly total, so you don't have to add up multiple calculators by hand.
When to Use This Calculator
- Your week includes a mix of regular, OT, and DT hours
- You're verifying a full paycheck, not just one rate
- You worked a holiday or state-mandated double-time shift
- You want to compare all three pay tiers side by side
How to Calculate Overtime Pay
Three steps to work out your full weekly pay by hand — or use the calculator above for instant results.
Calculate regular pay
Multiply your hourly rate by your regular hours (typically up to 40).
Calculate overtime pay (1.5×)
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5, then by your overtime hours.
Calculate double-time pay and total
Multiply your hourly rate by 2, then by your double-time hours. Add all three amounts together for your total.
