What Is Double Time Pay?
Double time pay means an employee is paid twice (2×) their regular hourly rate. Unlike time and a half, double time is not required under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) — it typically comes from state law, union contracts, or employer policy.
For example, if your regular rate is $20 per hour, your double time rate would be $40 per hour ($20 × 2). Double time is most commonly paid for holiday work, hours beyond a daily threshold in certain states, or extended consecutive-day shifts.
California is the most notable example: state law requires double time for hours worked beyond 12 in a single workday, and for hours beyond 8 on the seventh consecutive day worked in a workweek.
When Double Time Usually Applies
- Hours beyond 12/day (California)
- 7th consecutive workday, hours beyond 8
- Recognized holidays (employer policy)
- Union / collective bargaining agreements
